Over the weekend, we attended the 10th annual Bug Light Kite Festival in South Portland, Maine. It was our first big outdoor outing in quite some time and it made me super excited for the summertime. It’s been so rainy here so the sunshine was a nice change for us.
The Kite Festival is hosted by the South Portland Historical Society and is held at Bug Light Park in South Portland. There’s food, live entertainment, and of course, kite flying. I went to college right next door at Southern Maine Community College so I felt a bit nostalgic being back on campus and exploring the park.
Allie doesn’t have a kite yet so this was her first time actually seeing kites. My sister and I spent the whole drive asking her if she was excited to see them only to realize she had no idea what we were even talking about! ha! She must have been so confused the entire drive, wondering what these ‘kite’ things were that we were talking about.
Since there’s next to no parking at the actual park, we opted to park in one of the SMCC parking lots and walk to the park from there. It was a bit of a walk, but so much easier than trying to park closer and fight people for the very limited spots. We also chose to go after nap time as opposed to before so there was less of a crowd by the time we arrived (always do this when you have toddlers! It makes everything so much easier!).

It was literally the perfect day for a festival since it was sunny and 70 degrees. After weeks of rain, I was thrilled for some sunshine! But with the sunshine comes the risk of getting a horrible sunburn and we’re all about healthy skin in our home.

The first thing we did when we arrived at the park was sit down in the grass and lather on the sunscreen. Allie’s skin is so pale and fragile at her age so I really wanted to make sure she was protected before we did anything. Earlier this week, I had received an awesome package in the mail from Aveeno and we were super fortunate to have gotten a few new tubes of sunscreen to test out at the festival.
*While we did receive free product, I was not paid to promote Aveeno or its products on my blog or social media platforms. All opinions are completely my own and I simply wanted to share these products with you!
Aveeno sent us the Aveeno Positively Mineral Sensitive Skin Sunscreen as well as the Aveeno Kids Continuous Protection Sensitive Skin Sunscreen. We used Aveeno a lot last summer as well and really loved their sunscreens so I was super excited to receive more.

This sunscreen has an SPF of 50 and is both sweat and water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. This is perfect for those long summer outings. It’s also really easy to apply and has a non-greasy feeling which we really love! So that’s my quick little tidbit on why our family loves using Aveeno!

Once our sunscreen was applied, we let Allie wander the park, looking at the kites and dog-watching. I really think she was more into the dogs than the kites, but she seemed to enjoy the day nonetheless. This was really just meant to be a fun outing to enjoy the beautiful weather. So we made it stress-free. We arrived after the live entertainment ended (naptime was a bit more important to us than live music! ha!) but there were still lots of food vendors, tours of the historical society, and plenty of room to fly kites.

Since we weren’t flying kites, we opted to just let Allie wander as much as she wanted. She walked around for a solid hour before we decided to hit up our next location, grab food, and head home. It was a lot of outside time so Allie passed right out that night when we put her to bed.
This is Allie’s first full summer here in Maine so we have so many fun activities planned for her. Even though Zack and I both grew up here, I never knew about any of these types of events so I’m excited to explore more and find more things we love.
